Abstract

Investigations of the heat treatment influence on the luminescence of nanocrystalline ZrO2 + 10 mol.% Eu were performed. Nanopowder with average crystallite size of  5 nm and Specific Surface Area (SSA) of 160 m2/g was synthesized using hydrothermal-microwave synthesis method. Material was heated in air at temperature in range 400-850oC during one hour. The microstructure and luminescence characteristics were done. We ascertained that grain growth and decrease of SSA occurred in the samples annealed at temperature higher than 400oC. The most significant changes were observed for material heated at 850oC when average crystallite size increased to 12 nm and SSA decreased to 35 m2/g. We established that microstructure of the powders influenced their optical properties; the higher was  annealing temperature, the lower was intensity of europium luminescence.
