Abstract |
The ability of the barley husk and barley husk ash for removal of fluoride from aqueous solution through adsorption has been investigated. Batch kinetics and isotherm studies were carried out under varying experimental conditions of contact time, fluoride concentration, adsorbent dose and pH. Adsorption equilibrium of barley husk ash was reached within 4 hours for fluoride concentration 2-5 mg/l. Kinetics of adsorption obeyed a first-order rate equation. The adsorption of fluoride increases with increasing the solution pH value up to 7. The suitability of the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models to the equilibrium data were investigated for each fluoride -sorbent system. The results showed that the equilibrium data for all the fluoride -sorbent systems fitted the Freundlich model (R2=0.95) best within the concentration range studied. A comparative study showed that barley husk ash is very effective (87 %) than barley husk (33.7 %) for fluoride removal. The studies showed that the barley husk ash can be used as an efficient adsorbent material for removal of fluoride from water and wastewater. |
