Abstract

High concentration of Fluoride (F) in powder milk (formula-milk) can have adverse health effects on body. The fluoride concentration of powder milk was analyzed  in Iran in 2010. Twelve commercial brands of highly-consumed powder milk was selected to analyze fluoride content through standard fluoride ion-selective electrode (ISC)  method. Three samples with different production dates from each brand were selected. The mean (±SD) fluoride concentration in all the samples was 1.73 ± 0.3 mg F/g. The minimum and maximum F content in powder milk brands Humana2 and Humana3 were 1.32 ± 0.1 and 2.36 ± 0.3 mg F/g, respectively. The study revealed that there was no significant difference in fluoride concentration of the samples that belonged to various dates. Humana3 had high fluoride concentration (with an average of 2.36 ± 0.3 mg F/g) which can be a risk factor for dental fluorosis increase especially when being prepared by water with high F.
