Abstract

A new method called the “Liquid Phase Precursor (LPP)” is presented for the synthesis of nano-sized bar shaped BaMgAl10O17:Eu (BAM) blue phosphor. A cellulose pulp is used as a template and a mixed water solution having a predetermined Bax(x=0.80-0.90)Mgy(y=0.91-1.06)Al10O17:Euz(z=0.096-0.115) composition is prepared with barium chloride, magnesium nitrate, aluminum nitrate and europium chloride. The pulp is impregnated by inserting it into the mixed solution. And then pulp including solution fired at 800°C in order to vaporize the pulp. Final firing is conducted at 1300-1450°C for 1 h in a reducing atmosphere (5%H2 in N2). Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and Vacuum ultraviolet photoluminescence (VUV-PL) were used to characterize the material. FE-SEM analyses showed that bar shaped homogeneous particles were formed ~60 nm in diameter and 300-500 nm in length. VUV-PL was measured with 147 and 254 nm excitation wavelengths; PL intensities of our specimen and commercial product were obtained at (x=0.14, y=0.52) and (x=0.14, y=0.72) from the CIE chromaticity color coordinates under 254 nm excitation wavelengths, respectively, and it was found that our sample showed a slightly higher normalized intensity (100%) than the commercial product intensity (98.9%). Comparing our product relative to the commercial product at the aforementioned CIE chromaticity color coordinates 80% PL intensity has been obtained.
