Professor Jan Czochralski
is one of the most famous Polish scientists. He was born in
Kcynia in Western Poland, which was then under the Prussian rule, on
23 October 1885 and was the eighth child of Franciszek and Marta
Czochralski.
His initial interests were in Chemistry. One of his most
important discoveries was the technology for growing single crystals,
now known as the Czochraski Method. It was discovered in 1916 when he
found that after dipping a pen into a small crucible of molten
aluminium and withdrawing it, a thread of aluminium hangs from the
nib. Careful investigations had shown that this was a single crystal
and so the Czochralski Method for single crystal growth was born. The
method is used for example for the growth of the single crystals of
Germanium and Silicon which are the basis of a vast range of modern
electronic equipment and devices.
Czochralski spent the early years of the 20
th century in Germany. Although he had reached an eminent
position in German industry, he was invited to return to Poland by
the President, Ignacy Moscicki. In 1929 Czochralski accepted a
professorship in the Faculty of Chemistry at the Warsaw University of
Technology, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate. He organised
his scientific work through the: Department of Metallurgy and Metals
Science in the Warsaw University of Technology and the Institute of
Metallurgy and Metal Science.
Much of the later work of Professor Czochralski was related to
the properties of metals. He studied the anisotropy of the elastic
and plastic properties of metals, their corrosion resistance as well
as thermal effects related to the annealing of heavily deformed
metals. Professor Czochralski was a leading pioneer of X-ray
diffraction in studies of the processes taking place in metals and in
what is now described as technology transfer.
Taking into account the mertits of Czochralski for materials science, technology transfer to industry, and international colaboration, E-MRS established an award in the name of Jan Czochralski. The Society formally legalised the Czochralski Award for Achievements in Materials Science. In 2006 the Polish Materials Science Society, the Polish Society for Crystal Growth and the Polish Academy of Sciences joined with the European Materials Research Society to establish the International Chapter of the Jan Czochralski Award. For many years of communist rule, the achievements of Prof. Czochralski could not be adequately acknowledged in Poland. It is important to make the wide public aware of his tremendous contributions to Materials Science and to European collaboration in this field. It is therefore most appropriate that E-MRS decided to present the award in Warsaw University of Technology, where Professor Czochralski held a professorial position.
To date three recipients have been honoured: Professor Dr Walter Heywang, formerly Director of Research of Siemens, Professor Dr Boris Paton, the long term President of the Ukraine National Academy of Science, and Prof. Thaddeus B. Massalski from Carnegie Mellon University, USA. The year 2007 receipient will be Prof. Shuji Nakamura . Nakamura has had great influence on Materials Science by his inventions and concepts. Without doubt his valuable contribution will have great influence on the future science and may bring visible changes in the everyday life of the emerging information society.
Professor Shuji Nakamura was born on May 22nd 1954 in Ikata, Shikoku Island, Japan. In 1977 he graduated in electronic engineering from University of Tokushima and was awarded his Masters degree at the University’s Graduate School of Technology in 1979.
He joined Nichia Chemical Co. Research
Laboratories in Tokoshuma, working on the development of infrared
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). In the period 1988-89 he was a Visiting
Research Fellow at the University of Florida in Gainesville, USA and
worked on the MOVPE growth of GaAs based structures on Si substrates.
He returned to Japan and spent 1989-1999 at Nichia Chemical Co. His
main research field was developing nitride based optoelectronic
devices. He made many discoveries related to the design and
technology of the nitride based Light Emitting Diodes and Laser
Diodes. Perhaps most influential was his invention of the thermal
activation process of Mg acceptors needed for any p-n junction
nitride based optoelectronic device. Another was a new design for a
low-temperature nitride buffer layer on sapphire substrates, a
crucial step for the industrial fabrication of superbright blue and
green LEDs. In basic research he contributed his new model explaining
the role of indium in high efficiency of radiative recombination of
nitride based quantum well based semiconductor LED and LD devices.
Shiju Nakamura investigated various aspects of nitride laser
diodes and developed dislocation-reduction techniques for laser
design. His research resulted in the creation of the first blue laser
diode by Nichia in 1996 and his many inventions have been applied in
the Nichia technology of blue and violet nitride based LDs. The
Nichia Chemical Co commercialized a wide range of highly effective
semiconductor light sources based on his inventions including white
light semiconductor sources to replace the universally used
incandescent light bulbs, Other applications are related to the blue
laser such as dense optical data storage, or medical and
spectroscopic applications.
In 1994 he was awarded a PhD at the University of Tokushima and in 2000 was granted the Professorial Chair at the Department of Materials at University of California in Santa Barbara, where he now works. He has received numerous prestigious awards. Most noteworthy are two by the Japan Society for Applied Physics, the Nikkei Best Product and Excellent Products Awards, a Society of Information Display Special Recognition Award, the IEEE Laser and Electro-Optics Society Engineering Awards and the Honda Foundation’s 2000 Honda Prize. He has received the MRS Medal and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Engineering in recognition of his achievements. In 2006 he was awarded the independent Finnish Millennium Prize Foundation Technology Prize.

Achievements
During the 1960s Prof. Gleiter’s research focused on
precipitation hardening. The discovery of dislocation pairs by
means of transmission electron microscopy opened the way to
understand the strength and deformation behavior of superalloys,
the most important class of metallic high temperature materials
today. During his cooperation with Profs. Ashby, Chalmers and
Turnbull at Harvard University he pioneered the application of
molecular dynamics and transmission electron microscopy to study
the atomic structure of inter-crystalline interfaces. The proposal
of the structural unit model of grain boundaries as well the
discovery of the existence of dislocations in inter-crystalline
interfaces turned out to be instrumental for the subsequent
development of this field. In fact, today’s model of the atomic
structure of grain boundaries is the structural unit model
developed during his time at Harvard. In the late 1970s his
research group opened the way to a new area of Material Science by
proposing the idea to synthesize a new class of crystalline
materials in which the volume fraction of the cores of the
interfaces is comparable to the volume fraction of the crystallites
forming these interfaces. Materials of this kind were first
produced by the consolidation of nanometer-sized crystallites and
were thus called nano-crystalline or nano-structured materials. In
the subsequent years this field expanded at a remarkable rate:
today more than 500 papers are published every year and about five
international conferences are organized annually.

The time in Poland is the same as in Germany and Spain, but 1 hour ahead of Portugal and UK.
You can use public telephones with phone cards which can be obtained at the post offices, airport, railway stations, kiosks and in some hotels.
All polish GSM operators use GSM 900/1800 network type. When calling from your mobile to a stationary phone in Warsaw use the prefix "+4822".
There are several access numbers you can use, for instance 0202122, 0202422 (Telekomunikacja Polska) 0209568 (Aster City Cable). The login name is ppp and the password is ppp. The cost is the same as that of a local phone call.
The currency unit in Poland is the Polish złoty (zł) which is subdivided into 100 grosze (gr). The current exchange rate to Euro and US dollar can be checked at http://www.oanda.com/converter/classic (choose PLN as the Polish currency code). In November 2006 it is about 3,83 PLN for Euro and 2,99 PLN for USD. Participants may change foreign currency and travellers cheques at several banks located in the centre of the city as well as in many exchange bureaus, known as Kantors, located at the at the railway station, at the airport or in many others places.Frequently the rates at the airport and the station are lower than those obtainable elsewhere in the city. International credit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and cash machines.
Electricity supply is 230V.
The weather in September in Warsaw is usually warm and pleasant, however the evenings might be sometimes quite cold. The daytime temperature varies from 15 degrees to 18 degress of Celsius. There is the possibility of rain, so an umbrella and light coat are advisable. The weather forecast can be checked at http://weather.icm.edu.pl/knowmaps/wwweng/mgram1208.html.
Most shops (except for food stores) are open from 11:00 until 19:00. Some department stores may open earlier or close later on weekdays as well as on Saturdays and Sundays.
Shops with regional souvenirs, local handicrafts, contemporary and antique art are found especially in the Old Town. Polish craftwork is fascinating: wood craving and hand-woven rugs come mostly from the Zakopane region. Other souvenirs include glass, hand-woven baskets, paper cut-outs, articles made of natural color leather, crystal and graphic art. One of the most popular souvenirs is amber from the Baltic Sea. Most highly prized is amber with a prehistoric insect preserved inside, though it is a rare find. Poland is also known for its silver jewellery, which is sometimes combined with amber to create uniquely Polish pieces.
Poles are known for their hospitality and love of food. Polish meals offer a wide selection ranging from fresh game in season to Baltic herring. Red beet soup or borsch, is well-known, as are Polish sausage (kiełbasa) and stuffed cabbage (gołąbki). Dumplings (pierogi) come stuffed with meat, potatoes, blueberries, or sauerkraut and mushrooms. Bigos is a stew of meat and sauerkraut, while roast duck comes stuffed with apples. For dessert, try pastries with poppy seeds, or perhaps a Polish donut filled with preserved fruit (pączek).
