Abstract |
Surface modification of poly(butylene) terephthalate-poly(ethylene) terephthalate- polycarbonate, PBT-PET-PC blend, using sodium hydroxide pre-treatment and subsequent Cu deposition through electroplating technique is described. By pre-treatment with sodium hydroxide, a rough with carboxylate ions surface is obtained compared to the control as is shown by the etching rate. The molecular fragments generated during the pre-treatment process are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The roughness and the cross-section morphologies of the blend is observed by scanning electron microscopy. After the pre-treatment, the substrate surface is activated by using Sn/ Pd collodial activating bath, and then a thin Ni layer is deposited by electroless deposition for 6.5 min. Finally, Cu layer is obtained by 30 min electroplating. Adhesion of Cu layer evaluated by the Scotch tape test mainly depends on the surface roughness and the palladium content of the activating bath used. |
