Welcome

The E-MRS Fall Meeting has been organised since 2002 as a twin conference to the Spring Meeting held every year in Strasbourg. During that time the Fall Meeting has grew from 3 symposia and about 200 participants in 2002 to 12 symposia and around 750 participants in 2008. What is also important the conference became multi-national and has representatives from all over the world.

The Fall Meeting organizers follow the procedures developed over the years by the Society to host wide ranging multi-disciplinary conference to bring established scientists with a world reputation together to share their state-of-the-art knowledge and experience. The most important philosophy of E-MRS is to facilitate scientific and social contacts between established researchers, young scientists and Ph.D. students and promote technology transfer from public institutions to industry.

The European Materials Research Society ( E-MRS) a non profit scientific association founded in 1983 focuses on creating the synergy between interdisciplinary, innovative technologies, spreading and exchanging information and promoting technology transfer from public institutions to industry. The primary objective of E-MRS is to promote and enhance the efficiency of research in Europe in the field of Advanced Materials. E-MRS seeks to quickly inform researchers of the scientific and technological developments in their field of interest from the rest of the world through the society's links with other MRS societies belonging to the International Union (IUMRS). In 2002 E-MRS decided to launch in parallel to the well established spring meetings in Strasburg also the fall meetings in Warsaw. Already 6 fall meetings have taken place, in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008.

The Polish Materials Science Society (PMSS) was founded in December 2004. PMSS promotes interdisciplinary cooperation between scientists working in different scientific areas - materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, medicine etc.

PMSS works in close collaboration with E-MRS.
The main aims of the PMSS are:
- provide a platform facilitating interdisciplinary cooperation between materials scientists from different fields
- strengthening the interdisciplinary meetings, conferences, workshops and schools important for the PMSS members
- distribution of information among scientists working in the field of materials research

Awards

DSCN6634_1.JPG The Czochralski Award

Professor Jan Czochralski is one of the most famous Polish scientists. He was born in Kcynia in Western Poland, which was then under the Prussian rule, on 23 October 1885 and was the eighth child of Franciszek and Marta Czochralski.
His initial interests were in Chemistry. One of his most important discoveries was the technology for growing single crystals, now known as the Czochraski Method. It was discovered in 1916 when he found that after dipping a pen into a small crucible of molten aluminium and withdrawing it, a thread of aluminium hangs from the nib. Careful investigations had shown that this was a single crystal and so the Czochralski Method for single crystal growth was born. The method is used for example for the growth of the single crystals of Germanium and Silicon which are the basis of a vast range of modern electronic equipment and devices.
Czochralski spent the early years of the 20 th century in Germany. Although he had reached an eminent position in German industry, he was invited to return to Poland by the President, Ignacy Moscicki. In 1929 Czochralski accepted a professorship in the Faculty of Chemistry at the Warsaw University of Technology, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate. He organised his scientific work through the: Department of Metallurgy and Metals Science in the Warsaw University of Technology and the Institute of Metallurgy and Metal Science.

Much of the later work of Professor Czochralski was related to the properties of metals. He studied the anisotropy of the elastic and plastic properties of metals, their corrosion resistance as well as thermal effects related to the annealing of heavily deformed metals. Professor Czochralski was a leading pioneer of X-ray diffraction in studies of the processes taking place in metals and in what is now described as technology transfer.

Taking into account the mertits of Czochralski for materials science, technology transfer to industry, and international colaboration, E-MRS established an award in the name of Jan Czochralski. The Society formally legalised the Czochralski Award for Achievements in Materials Science. In 2006 the Polish Materials Science Society, the Polish Society for Crystal Growth and the Polish Academy of Sciences joined with the European Materials Research Society to establish the International Chapter of the Jan Czochralski Award. For many years of communist rule, the achievements of Prof. Czochralski could not be adequately acknowledged in Poland. It is important to make the wide public aware of his tremendous contributions to Materials Science and to European collaboration in this field. It is therefore most appropriate that E-MRS decided to present the award in Warsaw University of Technology, where Professor Czochralski held a professorial position.

To date five recipients have been honoured: Professor Dr Walter Heywang, formerly Director of Research of Siemens, Professor Dr Boris Paton, the long term President of the Ukraine National Academy of Science, Prof. Thaddeus B. Massalski from Carnegie Mellon University, Prof. Shuji Nakamura from University of California and Prof. Kurt Heinz Juergen Buschow from University of Amsterdam. The year 2009 receipient will be Prof. Hermann Grimmeiss from University of Lund .

The Best Poster Award

The best Ph.D. student's poster from each Symposium is selected by Symposia Chairpersons and honoured with an award for the best poster.

The first authors (presenting persons) of the best posters of E-MRS 2009 Fall Meeting will receive:

  • free registration for E-MRS 2010 Fall Meeting

The Poster Award Ceremony is on Wednesday, 16th September at Poster Session 2.

Here marches and demonstrations were organised. Today, the famous University Audience Hall is a representative place for Warsaw. Balls are held here in which the Prime Minister, the Marshalls of Parliament and Senate and many other eminent guests participate. The social, political, cultural and scientific elite meets every year at Carnival balls: the Alliance Ball and the Journalists' Ball.

Climate and clothing

The weather in September in Warsaw is usually warm and pleasant, however the evenings might be sometimes quite cold. The daytime temperature varies from 15 degrees to 18 degress of Celsius. There is the possibility of rain, so an umbrella and light coat are advisable.

What to see when in Warsaw

  • The Old Town (Stare Miasto) is for those who enjoy museums, art, and historical architecture away from the bustle of everyday city life. It is closed to traffic, and in its narrow streets you can relax and leave the 21st century behind for a while. Everything here is within easy walking distance. The Old Town is especially beautiful in the evening when its floodlit walls, houses and monuments begin to live a life of their own. An absolute must for all visitors of Warsaw.
  • Old Town Square This is the hub of the life in Warsaw's Old Town.
  • The Royal Route The Royal Route connects the Royal Castle with the other two royal residences: in the Lazienki Park and the Palace of Wilanow. Especially its northern part between the Old Town and Charles de Gaulle Roundabout is worth seeing, comprising Krakowskie Przedmiescie, with its many palaces and churches, and the beautiful campus of Warsaw University, and Warsaw's most elegant shopping street, Nowy Swiat. These two streets, carefully reconstructed after the war, are one of the few places that retain the atmosphere of pre-war Warsaw.
  • The Jewish Warsaw The Warsaw Ghetto, where during World War II the Nazis imprisoned over 400 000 Jews, comprises monuments commemorating the place from where Jews were sent to death in the concentration camps. Apart from the monuments, today there is little left that would remind of those days, as the ghetto was completely leveled during the Ghetto Uprising of 1943. The terror of those days, however, can be sensed at two small museums, the Pawiak Prison Museum and the Museum of Struggle and Martyrdom, situated in the cellars of the former Gestapo headquarters at 25 Szucha Avenue (today the Ministry of Education). The huge area of Jewish cemetery in Okopowa street can impress any visitor.
  • The Palace of Culture and Science The Stalinesque skyscraper over the city centre is probably the most impressive example of this style of architecture outside the former Soviet Union. At the multimedia information centre on the 30th floor visitors can get an overview of Warsaw and its history as well as breathtaking views of the whole city.
