Abstract

TiO2 is a popular material with large industrial production. This oxide presents several polymorphs including anatase, brookite and rutile. Each crystallographic phase exhibits physical properties, bandgap, surface states … [1-2], the particle size is also an important parameter on the nature of the properties [3]. Anatase is commonly synthesized by hydrolysis of TiCl4 or Ti(OR)4 [4-6], and hydrothermal way are employed for rutile [9] and micrometric brookite [10]. In literature, few works were reported related to the use of TiCl3 as a precursor, while it appears as an interesting compound as during the precipitation an oxidation step is necessary to obtain TiO2. The hydrolysis of TiCl3 was conducted in aqueous medium while varying synthesis parameters (pH, T, C, …). The structural and morphological control was realized by the control of synthesis condition. Very original TiO2 morphologies were obtained with very soft conditions. Brookite and rutile were obtained in the shape of nanometric platelets or rods, and nanorods of anatase was synthesized. This presentation is focused on the synthesis of TiO2 polymorphs by TiCl3 precipitation in water and on the influence of the synthesis parameters on the nature of the particles obtained. [1] M.
