Abstract

The purpose of this work was to identify phase components in the aluminium – AlSi5Cu2Mg casting alloy after the standard heat treatment - T6. The alloy was subjected to differential scanning calorimetric analysis in order to study phase transformation temperatures and the processes sequence which take place during continuous heating to the melting temperature. The studied alloy was heated up to 800°C at the heating rate of 4°C/s using the SETARAM SETSYS Evolution – 1200 DSC calorimeter. Afterwards, the alloy was hold at the selected temperature in the range of solidus-liquidus region and then quenched to the room temperature in water to freeze the microstructure. A microstructural analysis of the heat treated aluminium alloy was conducted by the means of light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Chemical composition of the precipitates was conducted by EDS using HITACHI-3400N scanning microscope with Thermo-Noran x-ray microanalysis system.

The results of the analysis have enabled the determination of the sequence of microstructural components formation, their morphology and evaluation of their pseudo-stechiometry. Therefore the demonstration of intermetallic phases distribution at different stages of the process was possible, which might be used to formulate the model assumption for the microstructure and process of the alloy occurred in the different stages of phase components development, what might be used to formulate appropriate model assumptions for the microstructure and processes of shaping and for the estimation of chemical and structural composition
