Abstract |
Chemical bath deposition (CBD) has been used for decades to deposit thin films of various semiconductors [1]. Recently, there is a new interest in the CBD which is motivated by its successful use in depositing buffer layers of CdS (and similar materials) in thin-film photovoltaic cells based on CdTe and CuInSe2 [1]. We review the results of our research towards tailoring the CBD-deposited films morphology, composition and optical properties for foreseen applications in photonics, spintronics, etc. We have been concentrating on the films consisting of closely-spaced nanocrystals of CdSe and CdS with radius from 2 to more than 10 nm [2-4]. We describe the effect of chemical (e.g., the concentration of individual components, the solution pH, ...) and physical (e.g., illumination, deposition temperature, ...) parameters of the deposition on the properties of the films. These were studied by TEM, XRD, EMP, optical absorption, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy and ultrafast laser spectroscopy. On basis of the obtained results, in particular of photoexcited carrier dynamics [5], we propose a microscopic model describing well the optical properties of nanocrystalline films.
