Abstract

High fluoride ingestion has a definite relationship with the prevalence and severity of diseases. There is very limited studies have been pointed out in association of hypertensive retinopathy and fluoride exposure. In the present study we have recruited 55 patients of hypertensive retinopathy from the high fluoride region (>4.5 ppm) of the Rajasthan and the age and sex matched positive control (N= 49) were selected from the region where fluoride content in water was less than 1.5 ppm. Venous blood was collected for analysis of total reacting oxygen species (ROS), Melanodialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl content (PC) and antioxidant levels namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidae (GPx). In addition, total fluoride levels in blood and serum lipid profile viz total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were determined in hypertensive patients and compares them with levels of positive control. The results revealed that serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were significantly raised (p<0.001) whereas the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower (p<0.001) in hypertensive patients as compared to positive controls. Reduced antioxidant enzyme and elevated levels of MDA and PC were observed. It was concluded that hypertensive retinopathy had higher fluoride content and it is associated with increased oxidative stress.
