Abstract

The reduction of oxygen has always been a cause of significant power loss in fuel cells technology. Pt based catalysts still remain the optimum electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction. For the catalyst preparation, Vulcan XC72 is commonly used as carbon support. A main focus of this research is the synthesis of PtWOx and WOx on different carbon support as alternative catalyst for fuel cell technology.

PtWOx and WOx catalysts on Vulcan XC-72, carbon aerogel and MWNts are prepared by impregnation-reduction method. SEM and EDAX analysis give the information about catalysts morphology and composition. The electrocatalytic ORR activities were characterized using voltammetric technique. We have also attempted an initial comparison of the electrocatalytic activities of PtWOx and WOx with commercially-available Pt/C catalyst (E-tek) under same voltammetric measurement conditions. The results revealed important insight into the electroactivity of our catalyst and give the possibility of replacing precious metal anode catalysts with transition metal compounds for hydrogen oxidation.
