Abstract |
In this project, we studied the processing, microstructure and nanomechanical properties of iron-tungsten composite coatings prepared using electro-deposition on copper substrate. We studied the effect of deposition temperature, PH values of the electrolyte bath and the applied current density on the deposits. The microstructure of the deposited Fe-W composites have been studied using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Both amorphous and amorphous/nanocrystalline composite coatings have been made and depth-sensing nanoindentation technique has been used to evaluate the properties of the coatings. The effect of strain rate on nanomechanical properties will be discussed, in conjunction with the nanomechanical properties measured using nanoindentation technique from the iron-based bulk metallic glass. In addition, we will discuss the size effects observed in the nanoindentation tests, including indentation size effect, sample size effect. |
