Abstract

Abstract:

Background:

Fluorine is one of fourteen elements which is essential for animal’s life. Role of this element in teeth and bone health promotion is widely proved. Since drinking water is typically the largest systemic supply, World Health Organization considered fluoridation as the best source of this element.

DMFT (the number of decayed, missing or filled teeth) is the most common epidemiological tools to evaluate dental caries. In spite of the focus of many different areas of Iran on evaluation of DMFT index and prevention strategies in oral health planning, there is not available information regarding this issue in Rameyan County. In this regards this study determined the level of fluoride in drinking water and DMFT index in students of Rameyan County and compared the result with standard level.

Materials and methods:

The study was a cross-sectional survey to determine fluorine in drinking water and DMFT among 1420 students’ guidance schools in Rameyan County. DMFT was evaluated by Observational methods and using questionnaire by oral and dental health workers. Spadns method and spectrophotometer device model DR-2000 were used to evaluate water fluoride concentration. Data analyzed by using SPSS 16 with Pearson’s correlation tests.

Results:

Evaluation of 60 sample of water in spring showed that the mean of fluorine level in Rameyan was 0.256 mg. The amount of this element in the cities of Rameyan, Khanbybyn and Daland were 0.504, 0.226 and 0.112 respectively which in Khanbybyn and Daland were lower than standard level. There was a negative relationship between water fluoride concentration with DMFT rate and temperature of environment. This means that with increasing the temperature, the level of fluoride in water in all these three cities were decreased and in contrast DMFT rate increased (p = 0.001).

DMFT rate for students in Rameyan, Khanbybyn and Daland were 1.8, 3.3and 4.97 respectively. There was a negative relationship between DMFT index and age, which were not significant.

Conclusion:

Due to the inverse relationship between fluoride concentrations in water supply and DMFT, it would be better to add fluorine to drinking water of Rameyan County to prevent dental caries.
