Abstract

Abstract: Groundwater is the major source of freshwater on the earth. Groundwater containing dissolved ions beyond the permissible limit is harmful and not suitable for domestic use. But fluoride one of the anions at low concentration and the higher than standard that endangers for human health. The study was carried out to access the fluoride, concentrations in ground water samples of different villages in Khaf City (Razavi Khorasan province) ,Iran Material and Method: In the cross sectional study all of the groundwater wells located in urban and rural areas were monitored in 2010. Totally, 98 groundwater samples were collected during this study. Fluoride concentration of water samples was measured using SPADNS method. Finding : the result revealed in urban area The fluoride concentration ranged from 0.106 to 3.166 mg/l, where 80% samples showed fluoride less than permissible limit and 20% water samples higher than permissible limit. And in rural area The fluoride concentration ranged from 0.13 to 3.575 mg/l, where 30.76 % samples showed fluoride less than permissible limit and 3.84% water samples higher than permissible limit and 65.38% water samples were within optimum limit i.e. 1-1.5 ppm. Conclusion : In the areas with low fluoride content drinking water, fluoride adde to drinking water or use of high fluoride content foods and beverages.. The recommendations for the circumstances with excessive fluoride content of drinking water are provision of drinking water from alternative sources and defluoridation of drinking water by point-of-use systems, respectively.
