Abstract

Cathode material LiCoPO4 has been grown using Co(NO3)2.6H2O and CoO as the precursor materials, abbreviated as LCPN and LCPO respectively, by the travelling-solvent floating-zone method at low Argon pressure. We presented a route to characterize both of the crystal boules including chemical analysis, phase purity analysis, Laue back scattering, polarization images, as well as the orientation determination of the single crystalline grains. Besides, we defined the development factor (V) to evaluate the growth rate of the grains, and defined the orientation deviation factor (δ) to evaluate the quality of the as-grown crystal boules. The calculated V for LCPN and LCPO are 0.05 and 0.09, respectively, indicating that the grains of LCPO develop faster than that of LCPN. The calculated total δ for LCPN and LCPO are 0.7723 and 1.9972, respectively, indicating that the grown LCPN has a better quality than that of LCPO. The results show that the grains containing in the as-grown LCPO crystal boule develop faster than that in LCPN, and the LCPN boule has a better quality than that of LCPO.
