Abstract

The relationship between specific heat and details of the vibrational modes of a twodimensional nanocrystalline model material (NCM) as a function of grain size and temperature has been investigated. The specific heat of the NCM was raised respective to that of a single crystal in the temperature range of about 28 K. This raise could be related to differences in the occupation of vibrational modes: The VDOS was subdivided in subspectra by means of the participation ratio (PR), which measures the fraction of the atoms contributing effectively to a given mode. The differences in the specific heat could be largely attributed to parts of such a subspectrum.
