Abstract

LiFePO4-based samples with impurities of H2O, Li3PO4, and Fe2P were prepared from precursors with composition of LiFePO4, Li1+xFe(PO4)1+x/3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1), and LiFe1-yPO4 (0 ≤ y ≤ 0.1) via a solution method. The compositions, crystalline structures, and morphology of the prepared powders were investigated with ICP-AES, XRD, and SEM, respectively. In order to reveal the effects of impurities of H2O, Li3PO4 and Fe2P on the amount of Fe2+ dissolution in LiPF6 electrolyte and on the cycling performance of LiFePO4/LiPF6 electrolyte/MCMB cells, LiFePO4-based electrodes prepared from various prepared powders with various moisture contents were dipped in LiPF6 electrolyte of various temperatures for two weeks. The electrochemical properties of the prepared studied with cyclic voltammetry and capacity retention study. The retention studies were/will be carried out at various temperatures with both of LiFePO4/Li and LiFePO4/MCMB cells comprised with LiFePO4-based electrodes containing various impurities. The anodes and cathodes obtained from the cycled cells will be studied with XPS and FTIR to uncover the effects of the impurities on the cycling performance of the LiFePO4/LiPF6 electrolyte/MCMB cells at elevated temperatures.
