Abstract

Unsymmetrical particles were expected to be useful for electrical display or the building block of photonic crystals. We prepared the Au localized polymer particles to use Au unit as activate site for thiol derivative materials. First, we got sub-micron particles by soap-free emulsion polymerization, and arranged onto a polystyrene substrate. Second, Au was sputtered onto the surface of particles, and the particles were removed from the substrate into an aqueous medium. The particles were reacted with functional materials such as ssDNA. These conjugates have potential to create new materials. For this purpose, new snowman-type particles were obtained. The particles are made by DNA hybridization, so they can reversibly be converted from snowman-type to respective spheres and vice versa. In this investigation, we could find it possible to undergo a reaction over the Au on the sub-micron particles, and to build up nano materials by using the novel particles.
