Abstract |
Ethanol metabolism is accompanied by generation of free radicals that damage cell components especially lipids. The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of the preventive effect of black tea on oxidative lipids modifications in different organs (plasma, liver, brain, kidney, stomach, lung, intestinal and spleen) of rats chronically intoxicated with ethanol. Ethanol intoxication caused changes in the antioxidant abilities of all examined organs which led to the generation of oxidative stress and, consequently, to the significant increase in products of lipid oxidative modification. Oxidative modifications were estimated by measurement of lipid hydroperoxides, malondialdehyde, and 4-hydroxynonenal by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and by spectrophotometric determination of conjugated dienes. These lipid-modification markers level of the all examined tissues were increased after ethanol intoxication (3-67%). Administration of black tea to ethanol-intoxicated rats remarkably prevents the significant increase (5-40%) in concentrations of all measured parameters regarding all the examined tissues, but especially the plasma, liver, stomach and spleen. The preventive effect of black tea in the other organs (brain, kidney, lung, intestines) caused decrease in examined markers of oxidative stress to a smaller degree (0,9-25%). It is generally believed that polyphenols such as theaflavins and thearubigins as well as catechins as major constituents of black tea are mainly responsible for these antioxidant actions. The described changes are in accordance with the liver levels of isoprostane-8-isoPGF2a a free radical oxidation product of arachidonic acid which appears to be most often used as a marker for oxidative stress. These results indicate beneficial effect of black tea in situations leading to oxidative modifications of lipids. |
