Abstract

We have investigated the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye in the aqueous suspensions of Eu-doped TiO2, Ag-deposited TiO2 nanoparticles under visible and UV light irradiation. To evaluate and distinguish various effects of the Eu-TiO2 and Ag@TiO2 photocatalystic activity, the Eu-doped TiO2 and Ag@TiO2 photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, BET, PL and UV-visible absorption. For comparison, the MO photodegradation was carried out in P25 TiO2 and Ag@P25 suspensions under the same condition. In the MO/ Eu-Ag-TiO2 system, Eu doping significantly enhanced the MO photodegradation under visible and UV light irradiation. The significant enhancement in photocatalytic activities due to doping of foreign elements can be ascribed to simultaneous effects of Eu and Ag on the electron trap and electron-transfer efficiency.
