Abstract

Polycrystalline samples of novel Sr5Pb3ZnO12 oxide were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Structure of the compound was studied using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) together with Rietveld refinement method. Sr5Pb3ZnO12 exhibit hexagonal lattice (space group P-62m, no. 189) with infinite chains of  edge-sharing PbO6-ZnO6 polyhedra surrounded by Sr2+ ions. Several hundred micrometer long needle-like single crystals were succesfully grown from polycrystalline powder using flux method employing NaCl as the flux. Obtained crystals were characterized by means of confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
