Enhanced superconducting transition temperature Tc by the carrier modulation in a high quality single crystal CuxPdTe2

Abstract

 Two dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenide (MX2) is one of interesting materials because of their unusual physical properties such as charge density wave (CDW) [1] and superconductivity [2,3]. In particular, MX2 compound also has a Van Der Waals gap between layers so that the intercalation or doping of cation dopant can be efficiently considered and studied. Among 4d transition MX2 compounds, CdI2-type PdTe2 compound is very attractive due to the peculiar electronic structure, in which the Fermi level (EF) locates at the valley of density of states [4]. Superconducting transition temperature Tc in BCS-type superconductors dominantly depends on the carrier density at around EF as one of main factors. Herein, we report superconductivity in CuxPdTe2 single crystal with the large size of ~1´1.8cm2, which is successfully synthesized by the conventional self-flux method as well as the vertical Bridgman method. Enhanced superconducting Tc from 1.7 to 2.6K is obtained by the carrier introduced in CuxPdTe2 as defined in the electro-magnetic and Hall measurements. These results obviously indicate that CuxPdTe2 compound could be considered as a new example of carrier modulated MX2 superconductor like the intercalated or electric field induced MoS2 superconductors with superconducting Tc depending on the carrier density at EF [2].
