Abstract

Some water quality parameters are considered from satisfaction aspect of consumers (e.g. hardness) however; presence of some other chemicals like as fluoride in concentration more than standard levels, could threat health of consumers during long term exposure. Present study aimed to provide quality feature of drinking waters of East Azerbaijan province especially for fluoride.

During the study, 668 analysis results of urban and rural water sources in 19 counties available in Province Health Center were checked and amount of fluoride, hardness, pH, alkalinity and electric conductance totally 3340 parameters were extracted and after statistical analysis were compared with standards. In the case of villages with high level of fluoride, re-sampling and analysis was conducted.

EC of drinking waters ranged from 104 to 4660 µs/cm with an average of 740 ± 570 mg/L. Value of hardness ranged from 40 to 1434 mg/L as CaCO3 with an average of 228 ± 100 mg/L. In 91.3% of drinking water sources, fluoride content was ≤ 0.5 mg/L. In 22 drinking water sources, fluoride content was measured >1mg/L that was led to dental fluorosis.

It is required that consumption of water with high content of solid and hardness to be limited if possible. For water sources which fluoride content is >1mg/L; considering possibility of dental fluorosis prevalence, it is required to provide new water source.
