Abstract

This study was carried out on groundwater fluoride concentration of Sari city in mazandaran province located in the north of Iran. Drinking water in the water network system, originate from Ground water wells. The chemical coagulation of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) 99% was used for defluoridation of ground water. The efficiency of PAC as a coagulant to remove fluoride from water was investigated. The effects of chemical dosage of coagulant in different PH and mixing speed, initial amount of fluoride, to remove fluoride are studied. The Jar test was used at 80-100 rpm, firstly to rapid mixing and then set up at 30 rpm. Samples withdrawn at 20, 40, 60, 80, 120 minutes and the amount of fluoride with Spadens procedure and DR 2000 spectrophotometer were measured. The best dose of PAC was obtained 1 mg per liter in the PH of 7 for 24.14 mg/L of initial fluoride concentration. The efficiency was achieved 51% for this situation. This study has showed that PAC for removal of fluoride at high concentration is appropriate. Furthermore, was cheaper than other absorbents.
