Abstract

The high stiffness and low density of Al-Li alloy make them particularly interesting for aircraft applications. Their properties may be improved by grain refinement to nanometer scale. To this end various severe plastic deformation methods can be used. The aim of this work was to describe the microstructure of an Al-Li alloy subjected to two different severe plastic deformation methods.
The Al-1.6wt.%Li alloy was used in this study. It was severely deformed up to strain of ~4. The microstructure was studied using optical and transmission electron microscopy. TEM observations have revealed the grain refinement from 300 μm to below 1 μm. It has also been found that the materials processed in these methods have different mechanical properties.
