Abstract

The increasing interest in applying the structural and functional potentials of ribonucleic acids (RNAs) in biotechnology and molecular medicine has lead 1998 to the decision to found the “Berlin Network for RNA Technologies”. In this network 25 projects are funded for ten years in equal parts by the Federal Ministry of Science, the Senate of Berlin and Industry. With this presentation an overview is given about the organisation of the network and its prospects for the future. An additional overview will be given about the latest scientific developments in the field of RNA technologies in the core facility of the Network, which range from high resolution x-ray structural analysis of RNAs, the development of high affinity nucleic acids specific for example for the detection and isolation of proteins (Zn++ - finger proteins, antibodies, and the NANOTAG developed by the ribosome display technique). In addition results will be presented in which the specific identification of virus infected cells will be documented. The up to date presentation of the latest developments and improvements in the in vitro protein synthesizing system will show that the in vitro system is in deed an alternative method for the production of proteins for molecular biology and even for some industrial applications. Since the RNA technologies have special requirements for bio chips which permit the parallel analysis of large numbers of information, which exceed by far the capacities of current chip systems, we are currently developing the BERLIN GIGA CHIP. A progress report in the development of this chip system will also be presented.
