Abstract

Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMSs) are considered promising materials for spintronic applications. Since they were predicted ferromagnetic at room temperature, research efforts focus their attention in system such as transition-metal doped zinc oxide1. However, the origin of magnetism of these compounds is not entirely understood and it is still debated. Indeed, experimental reports reveal a great disparity on the magnetic behavior of doped ZnO; going from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior for the same transition-metal dopant. Though, for homogeneous systems, magnetism seems to be strongly dependent on dopant/matrix interaction, carrier concentration, defects, and thus on synthetic condition2, 3.

We present the synthesis, characterization and magnetic behavior of Zn1-xMxO (M= Mn or Co) systems grown in different organic solutions. Doped ZnO were synthesized by both, thermal decomposition in coordinating solvent such as trioctylamine4,5 and solvothermal reaction with Benzyl alcohol6. In both syntheses we used identical precursors in order to determine the role of solvent on the magnetic and optical properties and, on the control of morphology as well. Moreover, these solution routes lead to the synthesis of gram quantities of pure phase nanostructures with high reproducibility and allow the incorporation of several transition metal dopants.
