The PSI - Free Electron Laser Project

Abstract

The PSI-XFEL covers the wavelength range from 0.1 to 10 nm and incorporates the development of an electron gun with small emittance and an acceleration with high gradient in a diode configuration immediately after the electron emission from the cathode. The fast initial acceleration, combined with a pulse of moderate initial current and correspondingly larger length, will alleviate space charge effects. A higher compression of the beam is required, which is effectively reached by an appropriate shaping of the longitudinal phase space with a newly developed 2-frequency cavity.

An overview of the project is given with a status of the R&D work and the achievements.
