Abstract

Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) is a powerful technique for the investigation of the elementary electronic excitations in solids. In RXES, an incident x-ray photon excites a core electron to the absorption threshold, and the x-ray emission resulting from the decay of the excited state is energetically analyzed. In recent years, this spectroscopy has progressed remarkably, becoming an effective tool, with elemental specificity, for the study of low-energy neutral electronic transitions, charge-transfer excitations, interband transitions, and energy-band dispersion.

I will present some applications of this technique in the study of oxides.

In the first part I will show how a Zhang-Rice-singlet excitation can be unambiguously identified in the O 1s RXE spectra of CuGeO3 measured as a function of temperature, angle and polarization [1].

In the second part I will show some examples of Mn 2p RXE studies of manganites, showing how this spectroscopy can be used not only for the identification of the low-energy transitions [2], but also for the study of the charge-transfer dynamics [3] of these compounds.
