Surfaces of solid substrates of chemical or biochemical sensors, operating either in gas or liquid media, are usually modified for selective or, in some cases, even specific sensing. The workshop will focus on the art of chemical as well as non-chemical decorating of surfaces and resulting recognition activity of the sensors toward target analytes.

Main topics of the workshop will cover various aspects of surface chemistry related to sensing and biosensing in solutions or gases, but are not limited to:

Chemical surface reactions
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)
Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films
Properties of thin films
Chemically modified electrodes
Polymer modified electrodes
Novel techniques and instrumentation for surface examination
Signal processing and detection techniques

All participants will be accommodated at one workshop site. Therefore, the number of participants is limited by capacity of this site. Accommodation of all participants at one site facilitates mutual contacts. Quite often, discussions continue far beyond the programme.
Particularly, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and assistant professors are encouraged to participate in the workshop. All presentations are expected to be widely discussed within the audience. Young scientists are welcome to present their research, so that they will have opportunity to discuss their results with senior scientists.
A half-day excursion will bring participants closer together for better personal acquaintance and ad hoc discussions in small groups.

Graduate students and junior scientists will present short communications related to topics of their research.

Abstracts

One A4 page self-contained abstract should be submitted on line. Abstract should clearly describe the most important results and conclusions of the problem(s) of surface modification for sensing being solved. Contributions will be accepted for presentations based on the submitted abstracts. A hard copy and/or electronic (compact disk) collection of abstracts will be distributed among participants at the beginning of the workshop.

The registration fee covers transportation from Warsaw to the workshop venue and back, lodging, meals and social events. Presentation contributors may apply for reduction of the fee. Approval of the reduced fee payment will be sent together with notification of acceptance of the contribution.

Venue

The Workshop will be held in Bialowieski hotel, Bialowieza, near heart of the 'Puszcza Bialowieska' National Forest Park. Bialowieza is located in the east part of Poland, about 200km from Warsaw. Participants are advised to have their walking shoes and rain coats as the Park attracts visitors with its wilderness of fauna and flora of the last natural European forest untouched by a human being. It may be raining or even snowing in November in Bialowieza.

Visa

No visa is required for participants from the European Union and most other European countries. If needed, please, contact the nearest Polish Consulate for visa arrangement. If you need an official letter of invitation, please, send your request of invitation letter to the organizers as soon as possible.

Insurance

Participants are adviced to take care of both their luggage and health insurance.

Travel Information

Warszawa can be conveniently reached either by plane or by train. The Institute of Physical Chemistry is located in the west part of Warsaw, about 8 km from the Warszawa-Okecie Airport and about 3 km from the Warsaw Central Railway Station (Warszawa Centralna). Please consult city map for better orientation.
